Since its founding in 1962, Audio-Technica has continuously pushed the boundaries of audio technology. Driven by the ambition to get ever closer to the purest, most emotional sound, the brand continued to seek new refinements in analog audio even after six decades of innovation. The result is the exclusive NARUKAMI series: a premium and groundbreaking listening experience in which technological perfection blends with refined Japanese craftsmanship.
The name NARUKAMI refers to the Japanese god of thunder and symbolizes power, intensity, and emotional impact. Rather than relying solely on technical specifications, the engineers trust their exceptionally trained ears and musical intuition. The goal is not merely measurable perfection, but a deeply felt experience. High-quality materials—crowned by the precious KUROGAKI wood—further strengthen the connection between the listener and nature.
KUROGAKI, derived from the persimmon tree, is a rare type of wood with a distinctive grain pattern featuring deep black, ink-like markings. The origin of these mysterious markings remains unknown to this day. The drying process also requires exceptional expertise and knowledge that has been passed down through generations. As a result, KUROGAKI enjoys an almost mystical status in Japan. Its Zen-like patterns and rare nature have made the wood beloved by nobles and scholars for centuries, and it continues to play a special role in Japanese culture.
The ear cups of the ATH-AWKG, crafted from this unique KUROGAKI wood, possess exceptional physical properties that contribute to a refined and natural sound reproduction. The hand-applied lacquer finish highlights the depth and complexity of the wood grain, which only becomes richer with age.
Technically, the ATH-AWKG is equipped with exclusive 53 mm drivers featuring highly efficient magnetic circuits made from German permendur magnets. This results in impressively accurate audio reproduction with a wide and immersive soundstage. Each driver features a lightweight, durable titanium surround and a 6N-OFC (high-purity, oxygen-free copper) voice coil, allowing the diaphragm to move with exceptional precision and ensuring optimal signal transmission. The exclusive D.A.D.S. (Double Air Damping System) structure divides the enclosure into two separate acoustic chambers, ensuring a fast, controlled, and extremely precise bass response.
The headband is crafted from a lightweight yet exceptionally rigid magnesium alloy and is angled to ensure an optimal fit and a perfect seal around the ear. Soft ear pads and a lambskin headband guarantee long-lasting comfort. A special bonus is the included set of interchangeable ZMF Universe Hybrid ear pads, which allow users to discover an alternative and unique listening experience.
The headphones feature A2DC (Audio Designed Detachable Coaxial) connectors for a secure connection to the two included 3-meter detachable cables. One cable is equipped with a gold-plated 6.3 mm stereo plug for standard audio equipment. The other cable features a 4-pin balanced male XLR connector for use with modern high-end hi-fi systems, resulting in improved channel separation and an even more refined audio reproduction.
As a final touch of luxury, the ATH-AWKG comes in an elegant carrying case finished with KUROGAKI wood. An aesthetic and functional masterpiece that perfectly complements the exclusive look of these exceptional headphones.
