Audio-Technica AT-VM95SP

The Audio-Technica AT-VM95SP was specially developed for playing 78-rpm records and uses a 3-mil conical stylus, which is designed to reduce surface noise on old shellac records. Because these records use monaural groove modulation, it is recommended to activate the mono function on a stereophonic phono preamplifier. This further minimizes noise and unwanted background sounds.

When used with a specialized archival preamplifier, the AT-VM95SP offers additional capabilities for the professional digitization of historical recordings. By sampling the left or right channel separately, or combining both channels, the least-damaged side of the groove can be used, resulting in less distortion and better sound quality.

The cartridge features an aluminum cantilever and delivers an output voltage of 2.7 mV. Thanks to its split generator design, the housing is fully compatible with all replacement needles in the VM95 series. This means that when the stylus wears out, there is no need to replace the entire cartridge; simply install a new stylus or, if desired, choose a different stylus type from within the series.

All six VM95 cartridges use the same electromagnetic system, making the replacement needles fully interchangeable. The available models are the AT-VMN95C, AT-VMN95E, AT-VMN95EN, AT-VMN95ML, AT-VMN95SH, and AT-VMN95SP.

The VM95 Series cartridge is also compatible with Audio-Technica’s XP Series replacement needles for DJ use. The XP Series delivers a higher output voltage and is optimized for intensive use, such as cueing and back-cueing. The VM95 Series, on the other hand, is specifically tuned to deliver the most natural-sounding audio reproduction possible.

The conical bonded stylus used has a large tip radius of 3 mil and is suitable for playing 78-rpm records from various eras. Thanks to this shape, it effectively tracks the grooves and minimizes surface noise.

Like all other models in the VM95 series, the AT-VM95SP features two M2.6 threaded inserts. This allows the cartridge to be mounted directly onto a tonearm or interchangeable headshell without the use of separate nuts. Included are a set of 8 mm and 11 mm M2.6 screws, as well as two plastic rings for easy and secure installation.
